History is not just things that happen but a dialogue with G*d.
The first part of the class focuses on confusion and word triangles.
EREV: EYEN RASHE BET:
Arab: we are surrounded by Arabs
Shabbos enclosure: also surrounds us
The meaning of the letters that make up _r_v:
In the triangles: How to resolve sweetness and confusion: using Shabbos? Jewish history is very confusing. By being collateral for each other? We struggle with opposition and seek resolution/unity.
The purpose of certain coincidences is to help us do teshuva. Sibling rivalry is not trivial. The sibling rivalry between Jacobâs sons led to the enslavement in Egypt. Today we have sibling rivalry between three religions.
Love your neighbor/your evil as yourself. Neighbor and evil are the same word. We have to integrate our own darkness or we will project that darkness outward. Our focus can be on rehabilitation and teshuva or on Joseph and success.
NASE: running away from problems.
TEST: Iâm wrestling with G*d. Thereâs something for me to learn in the dialogue between Torah and my life.
FLAG: We are mandated to turn the test into a flag. How do we recognize when weâre going around in circles? G*d put me here to learn how to make better choices.
Confusing: Moses is told he will redeem the Hebrews and immediately everything gets worse. The fly always lands in the wine. We have to go down to go up. We have to learn how to fail gracefully. We have to switch from Joseph-thinking to Yehuda-thinking.
TRF: Maybe Joseph-thinking is how to deal with the world, be effective in the world, in Torah context, and Yehuda-thinking is how to deal with oneâs self in Torah context, meaning that one is not better than the other, but that both are needed. Thereâs nothing wrong with winning Nobel prizes as long as it is a manifestation of oneâs self and not a replacement for oneâs self.
THE TEN PLAGUES:
Refer to the new study guide. The BARRIER is the bad behavior, the plagues are the consequences. At the end of the year of watching the Egyptians suffer from the plagues the Jews were trembling.
Frogs: frogs blow themselves up to look large and make a loud sound that drowns outâwhat? How about reasonable dialogue???? The way to do scapegoating is to focus on a characteristic, blow it up, and hate them for it.
Were the Exodus events miracles or tests for the Jews? Xtians say the biggest miracle was the splitting of the sea. To Jews it was not a miracle, it was a test. And the move out of civilization to the wilderness was a tough move. Four out of five people didnât go and were lost in the darkness of Mitzrayim.
We can create completeness by complementing each other.
Triangle for the word RA:
Jethroâs daughters were chased away from the well by RA, the bad guys or the shepherds. Moses gave the sheep to drink. Whose sheep did he water? Jethroâs daughters or the bad guy shepherds? Rashi says he gave the water to the sheep of the bad guys and appeased them. You have to go into a conflict with a willingness to fight, not like Neville Chamberlain (feh!). the main book which Ghandi used for non-violence was the Bhagvagita, a book about a war. The time for prayer is a time of battle with the yetzer hora. Being nice doesnât work. Sometimes appeasement works. You have to be ready to fight and to appease. The trick is know when.
When Moses helps Jethroâs daughters, he is called the SAVIOR. This is significant. The irony was that the result of rescuing the women at the well was that Moses lost his right to enter the Promised Land because he dressed like an Egyptian. He was up against choosing between his Egyptian self and his Hebrew self, and this was not an easy choice. He was the heir apparent to the Egyptian throne and the Hebrews had turned him in after he tried to rescue them.
SEX AND FOOD:
Our animal desires can be overwhelming. What is the connection between the mirrors used by the women to seduce their husbands to procreate and then used to wash before eating? Sex is in the west because it is confusing.
We put the discussion about NAZIR (confusion about eating) before SOTAH (confusion about sex). We donât want these animal desires either dammed up or out of control. If we disconnect eating and sex (schtoop), it becomes predatory.
The womenâincluding Tamarâwere committed to risking their lives to give birth.
Moshe is doing teshuva for years for murder. Sixty years later he is still doing teshuva. He had to deal with the son of the man he killed. This manh, the blasphemer, was executed for cursing the name of G*d which Moses used to kill his father.
You canât read the Torah without reading Rashi. You have to ask What is Rashiâs question?
And then confusing incident that occurs at the inn. The G*d of Compassion meets Moshe and seeks to kill him. Why is the inn mentioned? Rashi says that this is because Moshe was paying the bill instead of performing the bris. Why does he get the death penalty for such a minor infraction? The higher the elevation, the higher the stakes. Moving up is a place of greater risk. Why was it the G*d of Compassion? Why not the G*d of Judgment?
The Commandments evolve out of the plagues. Chumatz is repeating the same style of government. Look at the bottom of the page of the study guide for:
Freedom is replacing the yoke of Paro with the yoke of HaShem. The purpose of midrashim is to turn the written word into a conversation. It is so provocative you have to have a conversation about it.
Aish Kodesh page 262
We associate ashes with concentration camps.
The Chassidim and Gypsies sang and danced together as they went into the gas chambers.
The Aish Kodesh is quoting a wide range of books and thoughts in the first couple of paragraphs. It is a tour de force.
When you go into your darkest place you can release your potential. Nothing can withstand the force of teshuva. Nothing.
He says IN PLACE OF HIS SON. Who is the son? Yitzchak, J.C. and also the Aish Kodeshâs son. The main story the people identified with in the Warsaw Ghetto was the Akeida The midrash says Abraham sacrificed Yitzchak, who was resurrected after three years. This midrash is the basis for the Xtian religion. Karbon (mistranslated as SACRIFICE) means drawing close. It is the link between sex and eating. The korbon was like eating G*d. The Aish Kodesh is challenging us to complete our work. This is not history. Some people are dead while still walking around. Other become more powerful after their deaths. The Aish Kodesh was one of the latter.
The master of the Simcha is the Kohane, who was protected from the hurts of life. Eating is a symptom of depression. Sundering the HEY of malchute. Joseph and Yehuda. Sex cut off from the empty womb space. You have to build longing into a marriage to combat sloth and indifference: Nida before marital relations. The earth element cannot rise because of sloth but he says the ashes were filled with longing.
The Song of Songs (sex) positioned next to the ashes (food) connects sex and eating.
The Aish Kodesh elevates and sanctifies the loss.
My notes: HaShem says in the ruins of Jerusalem woe to me- If a person says that, it means if I could do it over again I would do it differently. Obviously HaShem does not mean this.
It is possible to survive great suffering. This is a very big idea.
Yehuda says I will not be sundered from my brothers. This is another very big idea.
